What this hire really comes down to

Tier 2 is where tickets stop being scripts. The analyst takes cases that Tier 1 could not close: devices that will not enroll, profiles that fail to apply, VPN sessions that drop, printers that vanish after a policy change and accounts that behave differently across machines. The value of the role is closure. Every problem a Tier 2 analyst solves without escalating protects the time of your systems administrators and engineers.

When you hire here, look at what your Tier 2 desk actually owns. Some teams give analysts real access to Intune, Entra ID and group policy tools. Others keep them to remote sessions and read-only consoles, which makes the role closer to advanced Tier 1. The candidate pool differs sharply between those two shapes, and so do expectations. Tell us honestly which one you run, because experienced people will judge the role on the permissions it grants.

A common mistake is promoting the loudest Tier 1 analyst rather than the best diagnostician, or hiring externally for a senior title but a junior scope. The best Tier 2 analysts are methodical. They reproduce a fault, change one variable and write down what happened. That habit matters more than any single tool name, and it is what we try to verify before introducing anyone.

What we check before you see anyone

  • CompTIA A+ and Network+ together

A+ covers devices and operating systems, and Network+ covers addressing, DNS, DHCP, wireless and routing basics. Tier 2 problems live at the seam between them, such as a laptop that has an address but cannot resolve names. We ask candidates to talk through how they would isolate that fault layer by layer.

  • Intune and Entra ID troubleshooting

We look for hands-on experience with device enrollment, compliance policies, conditional access prompts and sign-in logs. The question is not whether they have seen the portal but whether they have read a sign-in error and traced it to a cause.

  • VPN, printing and group policy closure

These three produce the most stubborn Tier 2 tickets. We ask for a specific case each, including what the root cause was and whether it stayed fixed. People who closed the problem properly remember the cause. People who rebooted until it worked remember only the relief.

  • Documentation that others can reuse

A Tier 2 analyst should leave knowledge behind. We ask whether they have written knowledge base articles or runbooks and how they decide something deserves one.

  • Coaching posture toward Tier 1

Tier 2 analysts often become informal mentors. We ask how they respond when a Tier 1 colleague escalates something simple, because condescension damages a desk quickly.

Where we find them

The natural source is the Tier 1 analyst who has outgrown the first rung. Corporate service desks and managed service providers both produce people with a year or two of consistent ticket work who are ready for deeper cases, and some have already been informally covering Tier 2 queues without the title. We approach these people individually and ask what they are currently allowed to touch, since the answer shows their true level.

We also draw on referrals from analysts we have previously placed at Tier 1, who tend to know capable peers and speak candidly about the work. Resume databases supplement this, but we filter hard for evidence of closed cases rather than a list of tools. People whose resumes name policies, enrollment and identity troubleshooting specifically are more likely to have done the work.

Mistakes we see

  • Treating a credential as the answer

Do not let comptia a+ and network+ together become a keyword filter. We ask candidates to talk through how they would isolate that fault layer by layer.

  • Leaving the actual scope out

Put the responsibility for intune and entra id troubleshooting in the brief, including who helps the hire and who decides. We look for hands-on experience with device enrollment, compliance policies, conditional access prompts and sign-in logs.

  • Waiting until the offer to discuss the work

Discuss what the person will own in vpn, printing and group policy closure before the interview loop. People who rebooted until it worked remember only the relief.

The search in three steps

  1. Agree the brief

Intake starts with a review of your escalation data in plain terms: which categories reach Tier 2 most, which tools the analyst can use and which tasks still require an administrator. That tells us whether to prioritize endpoint depth, identity depth or network sense.

  2. Find and speak with people

Candidates complete a structured technical conversation built around realistic faults from your environment. We note how they reason, not just whether they land on the right answer, and we summarize that reasoning in the profile we send you.

  3. Introduce the people who fit

We send a written brief on each person you meet, including why the work fits and the questions still worth asking about coaching posture toward tier 1. You decide who to interview. We help with the conversations through the offer.

Pay expectations matter at this tier because the candidate often compares your offer with a promotion at their current employer. A Tier 1 analyst moving up internally may receive a title change and a modest adjustment, so an external offer must be framed around scope, tools and growth rather than the title alone. We discuss that comparison with you before outreach, so the brief is realistic and candidates do not drop out late.

Questions about this search

When will we see a shortlist?

We agree the search plan after checking your requirements for comptia a+ and network+ together and intune and entra id troubleshooting, rather than promising a date before the brief is clear. A+ covers devices and operating systems, and Network+ covers addressing, DNS, DHCP, wireless and routing basics.

What if a candidate gets a counteroffer?

We ask what would make someone leave work involving comptia a+ and network+ together, and what could make them stay. Before you invest in interviews, we discuss whether your offer changes the problem they want to leave, including the responsibility for coaching posture toward tier 1.

Should this role be remote or on site?

Experience with comptia a+ and network+ together and intune and entra id troubleshooting does not settle the location question. Tell us what access and supervision the work needs, including who owns decisions about coaching posture toward tier 1, so we approach people who can accept the arrangement.

How will you check fit before we interview?

A+ covers devices and operating systems, and Network+ covers addressing, DNS, DHCP, wireless and routing basics. Tier 2 problems live at the seam between them, such as a laptop that has an address but cannot resolve names. We look for hands-on experience with device enrollment, compliance policies, conditional access prompts and sign-in logs.

How does the fee work?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. Agree the fee and the responsibilities covering comptia a+ and network+ together and intune and entra id troubleshooting in the recruiting agreement before the search proceeds.

What if the hire does not work out?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement. Make sure the agreed scope includes what you expect of coaching posture toward tier 1, rather than leaving that discussion until after the start.
