Hiring guidance

Start with the scope

Credentials identify individuals who completed specific training paths and passed knowledge-based tests. They confirm a person studied a topic or platform enough to answer questions under pressure. They do not demonstrate the ability to apply that knowledge in production environments. A certificate indicates a grasp of nomenclature, standard procedures, and interface layouts. It does not replace the need for work samples or peer review of actual code and system configurations.

Hiring managers frequently overvalue credentials for entry-level roles while discounting them for senior positions. For junior staff, these badges serve as an indicator of initiative and foundational literacy. For architects or senior engineers, focus on architecture experience and previous impact. Use certifications to filter for candidates who understand specific proprietary systems or standard security frameworks. Always distinguish between theoretical breadth and the practical constraints of your current infrastructure.

Hiring guidance

Foundation and Support

CompTIA A+ and Network+ verify baseline hardware, OS, and network connectivity knowledge. Candidates with these credentials should understand typical help desk tickets and basic physical layer troubleshooting. They do not prove an ability to manage enterprise-scale network appliances or complex routing tables.

Hiring guidance

Security Leadership

ISC2 and ISACA credentials such as CISSP, CISA, and CISM certify a candidate on risk management, audit protocols, and governance frameworks. A CISSP demonstrates knowledge of security policy construction. It does not certify the candidate as an expert in the configuration of specific firewall hardware or cloud-native security groups.

Hiring guidance

Enterprise Platforms

Credentials from Salesforce, ServiceNow, and Workday ensure a candidate is familiar with the specific object models, data structures, and APIs of these systems. These certifications are valuable because platform-specific quirks are difficult to learn without intensive focus. Use them to verify the candidate can speak the language of the application.

Hiring guidance

Cloud and Infrastructure

AWS, Google Cloud, and Cisco certifications assess knowledge of proprietary cloud services or network hardware command structures. These tests measure familiarity with the service console and basic service architecture. They rarely cover the edge cases of multi-tenant environments or the cost-optimization tradeoffs inherent in large scale production systems.

Hiring guidance

Development and Process

Project management and process credentials like PMP or Scrum demonstrate familiarity with standardized methodology. They indicate the holder understands the vocabulary of sprints, backlogs, and risk registers. They do not ensure the individual can lead a cross-functional team through a complex delivery or mediate interpersonal conflict during project stalls.

Hiring guidance

Verification and Access Pitfalls

Many enterprise platforms require specific access to official training environments for certification completion, which creates a verify-by-employer blind spot. For instance, Epic module training is usually restricted to employees of healthcare organizations. You cannot assume a candidate holds these credentials unless they were sponsored by a previous employer. Similarly, platforms like Salesforce and ServiceNow utilize distinct, role-based exam structures where a credential for one module does not imply proficiency in another. Always verify if a candidate maintains active access to the vendor learning portal for these credentials, as they often require yearly maintenance exams to remain valid. Do not treat a resume badge as proof of current capability if the candidate has been away from the specific platform ecosystem for more than twelve months. Prioritize direct confirmation of the credential ID through the issuer database, such as the PMI registry for PMP, rather than relying on self-reported resume entries.

Field, cabling and platform credentials are not interchangeable

BICSI credentials concern communications cabling work. The Fiber Optic Association issues CFOT for fiber fundamentals. AVIXA issues CTS and its installation and design credentials for audiovisual work. These are different disciplines. A technician who can terminate copper still needs evidence of fiber testing or room commissioning before you give them that scope. Ask who inspected the work, which test records they produced and what happened when the site changed. A course certificate alone does not answer those questions. For cloud-native roles, Kubernetes certifications come through the Cloud Native Computing Foundation and The Linux Foundation. CKA addresses administration, CKAD application development and CKS security. Match the credential to the work, then ask about a cluster the person actually operated. Microsoft and Google credentials also need the product and role attached. Microsoft 365 administration is not the same work as Azure architecture. Google Workspace administration is not Google Cloud engineering. Confirm the exact credential with its issuer and ask for evidence from the environment you will put the person into. Do not turn a badge into a substitute for a technical interview.

Questions buyers ask

Does a credential guarantee a candidate can perform the work?

No. Credentials indicate tested knowledge of terminology and theory. They do not prove an individual can build or maintain complex systems under production pressure.

Should I prioritize candidates with high-level security certifications?

Security certifications are useful for governance and audit roles. However, technical implementation capability requires a record of deploying security protocols in systems similar to yours.

How should I view certifications during a final shortlist review?

Use them to break ties between otherwise equal candidates. If the technical depth of experience is missing, a certification will not compensate for the lack of practical history.

Does a platform certification mean the candidate is ready for immediate deployment?

Not necessarily. Certification confirms the person knows the system components. Production readiness requires experience with your specific instance, existing data debt, and internal customization history.

Why do some roles require certifications while others ignore them?

Roles involving strict regulatory compliance or proprietary enterprise software often rely on certifications as a common baseline. In creative or highly custom engineering roles, experience with actual system failure recovery is more telling than any badge.

Working with Technology Headhunters

When is the recruiting fee due?

There is no upfront fee for our contingency search. You pay only if you hire someone we present, under the terms of the signed agreement.

What happens if a candidate receives a counteroffer?

We discuss the reason for considering a move before you invest in interviews. A counteroffer can change the decision, so we revisit that reason rather than assume more pay will settle it.

What are the replacement terms?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

What don't you do in a permanent search?

We do not bill by the hour for permanent search or charge a retainer unless one is agreed. We do not treat reposting your job advertisement as headhunting.
