What this hire really comes down to
A desktop support engineer is the person who stops treating endpoints as individual machines and starts treating them as a fleet. They build the packages, policies and deployment sequences that technicians and users depend on. The work includes Intune configuration, application packaging, Autopilot profiles, update rings, compliance rules and the scripts that tie them together. When the role is hired well, the number of one-off desktop tickets falls because the platform behaves consistently.
Scope is the central question. Some employers use the title for a senior technician who handles the hardest tickets. Others use it for an endpoint engineer who owns the management platform. The skills barely overlap beyond the basics. We ask what decisions the engineer will make alone, whether they will write and test packages, who approves changes and whether they carry on-call responsibility. Candidates with real engineering experience screen out of roles that are secretly technician jobs with a better title.
Migration state shapes the search too. Teams moving from on-premises configuration management to cloud endpoint management need people who have lived through that transition and know where it breaks, such as legacy applications, co-management quirks and driver handling. Teams already cloud-native want deeper policy and security baseline experience. Tell us where you are, because candidates with the right migration history are rarer than candidates with the right tool names.
What we check before you see anyone
MD-102 Endpoint Administrator
The Microsoft 365 Endpoint Administrator certification covers deployment, management and protection of endpoints, including Intune, Autopilot and update management. We confirm it is current and then test depth with questions about how the candidate has used each area, since certification alone does not show whether they have handled a real rollout.
Intune, MECM and Autopilot packaging and policy
We ask the candidate to walk through packaging a stubborn application, from detection rules to deployment and rollback, and to describe how they structured policies and update rings across different user groups. Experience with co-management between Configuration Manager and Intune is a strong signal.
PowerShell
Endpoint engineering depends on scripting for remediation, reporting and automation. We ask for something they wrote, how they tested it and what safeguards it had. Candidates should explain error handling and how they avoided harming devices at scale.
Change control and testing discipline
A bad policy can lock out thousands of users. We ask how they pilot changes, who they notify and how they roll back.
Security baseline awareness
We check understanding of device encryption, compliance policies and conditional access dependencies, since endpoint engineers now sit close to security.
Application compatibility
Legacy line-of-business software is a frequent source of endpoint pain. We ask how they approach testing an old application on a new operating system, and what they do when a vendor has stopped support.
Driver and hardware lifecycle
We probe on driver management, firmware updates and handling a new hardware model across the fleet, since that detail often decides whether a refresh goes smoothly.
Where we find them
Enterprise end user computing teams are the richest source, because their engineers have owned fleet-scale platforms and learned the discipline of staged rollouts. Managed service providers also produce strong candidates, particularly those who have managed endpoints across many tenants and had to standardize quickly. Both groups can usually describe their platform design in detail.
Desktop leads who have been quietly doing engineering work on top of technician duties are a third pool and often the most motivated. They may lack the title but hold real experience. We contact them directly, probe the scope of what they actually manage and verify their certification before presenting them against engineering expectations.
Some of the best candidates are not obvious from titles. Systems administrators who spent most of their time in endpoint management often hold deeper skill than their label suggests, and security teams occasionally hold endpoint engineers who have drifted into compliance work and would welcome a return. We search by the work performed, not only by job title, and we ask each person which portion of their week involves device management.
Mistakes we see
Treating a credential as the answer
Do not let md-102 endpoint administrator become a keyword filter. We confirm it is current and then test depth with questions about how the candidate has used each area, since certification alone does not show whether they have handled a real rollout.
Leaving the actual scope out
Put the responsibility for intune, mecm and autopilot packaging and policy in the brief, including who helps the hire and who decides. We ask the candidate to walk through packaging a stubborn application, from detection rules to deployment and rollback, and to describe how they structured policies and update rings across different user groups.
Waiting until the offer to discuss the work
Discuss what the person will own in powershell before the interview loop. Candidates should explain error handling and how they avoided harming devices at scale.
The search in three steps
Agree the brief
We open by understanding your endpoint estate: device count, operating systems, management platforms, application portfolio and the state of any migration. We also ask who will be this engineer's peers and manager.
Find and speak with people
Candidates complete a technical conversation focused on design choices rather than trivia. We look for reasoning about trade-offs, such as when to use a script and when to use a policy, and we summarize that for you.
Introduce the people who fit
We send a written brief on each person you meet, including why the work fits and the questions still worth asking about driver and hardware lifecycle. You decide who to interview. We help with the conversations through the offer.
Documentation and handover are the quiet outputs of a good endpoint engineer. Packages, policies and task sequences that only one person understands become a risk when that person leaves or goes on vacation. Ask candidates how they document their builds and how a colleague could take over. Teams that expect this from the start build a healthier platform, and engineers who value it tend to stay longer.
Questions about this search
When will we see a shortlist?
We agree the search plan after checking your requirements for md-102 endpoint administrator and intune, mecm and autopilot packaging and policy, rather than promising a date before the brief is clear. The Microsoft 365 Endpoint Administrator certification covers deployment, management and protection of endpoints, including Intune, Autopilot and update management.
What if a candidate gets a counteroffer?
We ask what would make someone leave work involving md-102 endpoint administrator, and what could make them stay. Before you invest in interviews, we discuss whether your offer changes the problem they want to leave, including the responsibility for driver and hardware lifecycle.
Should this role be remote or on site?
Experience with md-102 endpoint administrator and intune, mecm and autopilot packaging and policy does not settle the location question. Tell us what access and supervision the work needs, including who owns decisions about driver and hardware lifecycle, so we approach people who can accept the arrangement.

How does the fee work?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. Agree the fee and the responsibilities covering md-102 endpoint administrator and intune, mecm and autopilot packaging and policy in the recruiting agreement before the search proceeds.
What if the hire does not work out?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement. Make sure the agreed scope includes what you expect of driver and hardware lifecycle, rather than leaving that discussion until after the start.
