What this hire really comes down to

Hiring a junior data analyst means choosing someone to grow into your analysis function. Employers come to us when senior analysts spend time on routine pulls, when operations teams need numbers without waiting, or when they want to build a bench. The danger is mistaking tool familiarity for analytical thinking. A new analyst who can build a chart but cannot ask whether the data is right will cause trouble in a year.

Environment determines suitability. A team with a senior analyst who reviews work can develop a new graduate. An operations department with no analytics support needs someone who already works independently on small problems. Decide who will review queries, define metrics and teach how your data is structured. We ask before searching, because junior hires without review often produce confident, wrong answers.

The practical standard is SQL and Excel, plus Power BI or Tableau, backed by a credential such as the Google Data Analytics certificate or similar. Certificates show commitment, not capability, so we test with a real dataset conversation. Good candidates describe checking for duplicates, nulls and outliers, ask about definitions and show their work clearly. They explain findings in plain language to someone who is not technical.

What we check before you see anyone

  • SQL and Excel

Give a small table and ask for totals by category, then a second question requiring a join. Observe how they check results against a quick manual calculation.

  • Power BI or Tableau

Ask them to explain a dashboard they built: audience, key measures, filters and why they chose each chart. Probe how they would handle a stakeholder who wants twenty visuals.

  • Google Data Analytics certificate or similar

Treat it as a starting point. Ask what they did beyond the coursework, and which part of the capstone they would redo today.

  • Data cleaning judgment

Present a dataset with duplicates and missing values and ask what they would do first. Look for questions before action.

Where we find them

Graduates in business, statistics, economics and related fields bring fresh training and enthusiasm. Look for those who worked with real or messy data in coursework, internships or research, and probe how they handled it.

Analytics bootcamps provide career changers who often bring professional maturity from other fields. Quality varies, so evaluate their projects closely and check for continued practice after the course ended.

Operations analysts, coordinators and customer service staff who already work with reports are another strong pool. They know the business and the pain of poor data, and they typically need the technical layer sharpened, not the judgment.

Mistakes we see

  • Treating a credential as the answer

Do not let sql and excel become a keyword filter. Observe how they check results against a quick manual calculation.

  • Leaving the actual scope out

Put the responsibility for power bi or tableau in the brief, including who helps the hire and who decides. Ask them to explain a dashboard they built: audience, key measures, filters and why they chose each chart.

  • Waiting until the offer to discuss the work

Discuss what the person will own in google data analytics certificate or similar before the interview loop. Ask what they did beyond the coursework, and which part of the capstone they would redo today.

The search in three steps

  1. Agree the brief

We begin by asking what first projects the analyst will take and who will review them. Without that, we suggest a different level.

  2. Find and speak with people

Screening combines a data conversation with a small exercise. We pass on observations about how the candidate thinks aloud and takes feedback.

  3. Introduce the people who fit

We send a written brief on each person you meet, including why the work fits and the questions still worth asking about data cleaning judgment. You decide who to interview. We help with the conversations through the offer.

Red flags include portfolios of polished dashboards on clean public datasets with no discussion of data problems, copied project write ups and an inability to explain a join. Good evidence includes a project where they cleaned messy data, made a sensible recommendation and acknowledged limits. Operational experience, such as working in logistics or customer service before analysis, is a real advantage.

It also helps to be honest about the first ninety days. A new analyst will make mistakes on definitions, and a supportive review habit turns them into learning. Employers who allow questions and supply a data dictionary get productive analysts faster than those who expect guesswork.

Think about the domain too. A junior analyst in a hospital, a retailer and a freight business needs to learn very different vocabularies, and the learning curve in the business often exceeds the technical one. Candidates with prior exposure to your sector, even in a non analytical role, reach useful output sooner. Consider offering a short structured first project with clear questions and available data, so you and the new analyst can both judge progress early and adjust the plan without drama.

Questions about this search

When will we see a shortlist?

We agree the search plan after checking your requirements for sql and excel and power bi or tableau, rather than promising a date before the brief is clear. Give a small table and ask for totals by category, then a second question requiring a join.

What if a candidate gets a counteroffer?

We ask what would make someone leave work involving sql and excel, and what could make them stay. Before you invest in interviews, we discuss whether your offer changes the problem they want to leave, including the responsibility for data cleaning judgment.

Should this role be remote or on site?

Experience with sql and excel and power bi or tableau does not settle the location question. Tell us what access and supervision the work needs, including who owns decisions about data cleaning judgment, so we approach people who can accept the arrangement.

How will you check fit before we interview?

Give a small table and ask for totals by category, then a second question requiring a join. Observe how they check results against a quick manual calculation. Ask them to explain a dashboard they built: audience, key measures, filters and why they chose each chart.

How does the fee work?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. Agree the fee and the responsibilities covering sql and excel and power bi or tableau in the recruiting agreement before the search proceeds.

What if the hire does not work out?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement. Make sure the agreed scope includes what you expect of data cleaning judgment, rather than leaving that discussion until after the start.
