Titles we fill
Cleared Help Desk and Desktop Support, Govtech and Defense
Cleared help desk and desktop support is a different category of hiring than uncleared IT, because the candidate pool is defined first by eligibility and only second by skill. Contractors and agencies that run support on government networks need technicians who hold an active Secret clearance, are United States citizens, and meet the Department of Defense baseline certification requirements under DoD 8140, which for most support positions means Security+ or an equivalent. The work is usually on site, on classified or controlled networks, with limited ability to use ordinary remote tools or personal devices.
The practical effect is a small pool and a long list of constraints. Clearance adjudication is not something a buyer can speed up, and an interim or lapsed clearance is not the same as an active one. Work locations are often fixed to installations and secure facilities, so candidates must live nearby. Labor categories in contracts sometimes require specific degrees, years of experience or certifications, and a technically strong candidate who misses one requirement can cause an invoicing problem later. We help buyers confirm what the contract requires, what the customer will actually enforce, and which items are negotiable, so the search is built around real conditions. Many buyers underestimate how much a documented clearance process shapes timing and start dates.
What we screen for
Clearance and eligibility
We verify clearance status through the process the buyer's security officer uses, and we ask candidates for dates, level, investigation type and whether it is active, in reinvestigation or has lapsed. We confirm citizenship and any restrictions on where the person can work. We never ask for classified details, and we explain to candidates what information a hiring facility security officer will request. Candidates who are vague about clearance status are screened out early.
Baseline certification
We look for Security+ as the most common DoD 8140 baseline for support work, and for higher credentials such as CySA+, CASP+ or Network+ where the labor category requires them. We verify that certificates are current, since many lapse without continuing education. Beyond credentials, we want practical experience with Windows endpoints, Active Directory on controlled networks, smart card or CAC authentication and STIG-hardened configurations.
Operating discipline
Cleared support work depends on process: removable media control, ticket handling for classified tickets, and clear separation of networks. We ask a scenario in which a user asks the technician to move a file between networks in a way that bypasses policy. The right answer is a calm no and a documented route. We also check comfort with on-site schedules, badge access and a government customer's expectations of punctuality.
Red flags
We worry about candidates who treat clearance rules casually, who discuss prior work in more detail than appropriate, or who cannot confirm whether their investigation is current. Gaps in employment that cannot be explained, unresolved financial or conduct matters the candidate raises, and inconsistent dates between the resume and clearance record all create adjudication risk. Anyone who offers to work around the customer's security staff is not suitable.
Where we find them
The primary source is military and veteran technicians who held clearances in service, particularly communications, signals and network specialties, who left the military with active or recently active eligibility. A second source is existing cleared support staff at other contract programs whose work is ending or who want a different site. A third is cleared administrators and technicians in federal civilian offices who are moving to the contractor side.
Because clearance status reduces the pool so sharply, we maintain contact with candidates before there is an opening, and we are open about where the market is thin. Entry-level candidates with eligibility but no active clearance are possible when a customer supports sponsorship, though that depends on the contract and the facility. We source by background type and location rather than named employers, and we do not suggest buyers rely on broad public postings, which attract candidates who cannot meet the eligibility test.
The role and the hiring environment
How a Cleared Help Desk and Desktop Support, Govtech and Defense search runs
We start by reading the labor category and contract requirements with you: clearance level, citizenship, certifications, education, years of experience, site and shift. We ask whether the customer enforces each item and whether an interim clearance is acceptable. From there we compile a shortlist of eligible candidates, verified before presentation. Interviews cover tools and process discipline, and you receive written notes on each candidate with the verified items listed separately from the stated ones.
We are plain about timing constraints that are outside our control, such as clearance transfer procedures, and we do not promise start dates. Permanent placement fits long-running programs, while contract and contract-to-hire fit programs tied to a recompete or a defined period, and we quote those individually. When a position needs a higher clearance or a polygraph, we say frankly that the pool is much smaller and discuss how that affects the plan.

Questions about this search
When will we see a shortlist?
We agree the search plan after checking your requirements for clearance and eligibility and baseline certification, rather than promising a date before the brief is clear. We verify clearance status through the process the buyer's security officer uses, and we ask candidates for dates, level, investigation type and whether it is active, in reinvestigation or has lapsed.
What if a candidate gets a counteroffer?
We ask what would make someone leave work involving clearance and eligibility, and what could make them stay. Before you invest in interviews, we discuss whether your offer changes the problem they want to leave, including the responsibility for operating discipline.
Should this role be remote or on site?
Experience with clearance and eligibility and baseline certification does not settle the location question. Tell us what access and supervision the work needs, including who owns decisions about operating discipline, so we approach people who can accept the arrangement.
How will you check fit before we interview?
We verify clearance status through the process the buyer's security officer uses, and we ask candidates for dates, level, investigation type and whether it is active, in reinvestigation or has lapsed. We confirm citizenship and any restrictions on where the person can work. We look for Security+ as the most common DoD 8140 baseline for support work, and for higher credentials such as CySA+, CASP+ or Network+ where the labor category requires them.
How does the fee work?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. Agree the fee and the responsibilities covering clearance and eligibility and baseline certification in the recruiting agreement before the search proceeds.
What if the hire does not work out?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement. Make sure the agreed scope includes what you expect of operating discipline, rather than leaving that discussion until after the start.
