What this hire really comes down to

The Penetration Tester performs critical offensive security operations to identify and exploit vulnerabilities before malicious actors do. Your hire will conduct deep dives into network protocols, web applications, and cloud configurations to reveal hidden weaknesses in our defensive posture. Your output is not merely a list of flaws but a strategic analysis that enables engineering teams to fortify systems permanently.

Success in this role requires a persistent mindset for uncovering unconventional attack vectors through rigorous manual testing and sophisticated tool usage. Your hire will collaborate closely with product security squads to reproduce findings and validate fixes in real world scenarios. This work serves as the ultimate test of our security controls and drives a culture of continuous improvement in defensive design.

What we check before you see anyone

  • Offensive Certification Validation

We require evidence of advanced offensive certifications such as OSCP, OSEP, or GPEN. You should discuss your journey to achieving these credentials and how they shaped your methodical approach to exploitation. We look for candidates who can apply the high pressure testing skills learned during these exams to complex, multi tiered production applications while adhering to strict rules of engagement throughout testing.

  • Full Stack Testing

Candidates must show deep expertise in testing web applications, network infrastructure, and cloud environments. You should describe your methodology for discovering vulnerabilities in modern API endpoints and serverless architectures. We evaluate the candidate's ability to move across different technology layers to uncover interdependencies that result in exploitable security gaps that standard automated vulnerability scanners are likely to miss during routine internal security scans.

  • Report Quality Standard

We assess the candidate's ability to communicate complex vulnerabilities through high quality professional reports. You should provide examples of how you present findings to developers and stakeholders to ensure remediation is understood and prioritized effectively. Your report must contain clear reproduction steps, comprehensive risk impact analysis, and actionable technical recommendations that directly support the efforts of engineering teams to improve system security.

  • Cloud Exploitation Skills

You must demonstrate technical skill in identifying misconfigurations in cloud environments like AWS or Azure. Candidates should discuss their experience with privilege escalation, insecure storage buckets, and overly permissive IAM roles. We look for evidence of the candidate's ability to conduct thorough assessments of cloud native architectures while ensuring that your testing activities do not disrupt service availability for our critical business customers.

  • Bypassing Security Controls

We evaluate the candidate's ability to think like an attacker by finding ways to bypass traditional perimeter security measures. You should explain your experience in circumventing multi factor authentication, evading network security monitoring, or bypassing web application firewall rules. We look for a deep understanding of defensive mechanisms and how they fail under persistent manual pressure during a focused offensive engagement or assessment.

  • Manual Exploitation Logic

Successful testers prioritize manual exploration over relying exclusively on automated tools. You should describe how you perform custom payload crafting and environment analysis to identify unique vulnerability classes. We look for candidates who possess the patience and technical depth to perform deep discovery activities that reveal complex logic flaws which are vital to uncovering the most dangerous threats within our systems.

Where we find them

Our sourcing focuses on the community of offensive security professionals who compete in capture the flag events and contribute to bug bounty programs. We look for individuals who maintain high rankings and share their technical research. These practitioners have proven their ability to solve complex problems under competitive pressure and possess the dedication required to perform high quality offensive security assessments.

We also recruit from specialized red teams and security consultancies where offensive methodologies are refined through daily engagements against varied infrastructure. Our strategy centers on finding those who excel at moving beyond basic vulnerability discovery to providing deep insights into system resilience. We seek individuals who are interested about the research process and committed to advancing defensive capabilities.

Mistakes we see

  • Treating a credential as the answer

Do not let offensive certification validation become a keyword filter. We look for candidates who can apply the high pressure testing skills learned during these exams to complex, multi tiered production applications while adhering to strict rules of engagement throughout testing.

  • Leaving the actual scope out

Put the responsibility for full stack testing in the brief, including who helps the hire and who decides. Candidates must show deep expertise in testing web applications, network infrastructure, and cloud environments.

  • Waiting until the offer to discuss the work

Discuss what the person will own in report quality standard before the interview loop. Your report must contain clear reproduction steps, comprehensive risk impact analysis, and actionable technical recommendations that directly support the efforts of engineering teams to improve system security.

The search in three steps

  1. Agree the brief

The process begins with an assessment of your methodology for conducting an offensive engagement against a simulated target. We evaluate your planning and reconnaissance phases, as well as your prioritization of attack vectors. This discussion helps us understand how you manage your time and resources during an assessment while ensuring comprehensive coverage of the most critical system components and features.

  2. Find and speak with people

The final stage is a simulated reporting exercise where you document and present your findings from a recent penetration test. We focus on the clarity of your technical explanation and the candidate's ability to convince engineering stakeholders of the importance of your recommendations. This session confirms the candidate's ability to act as a bridge between offensive research and effective defensive system engineering.

  3. Introduce the people who fit

We send a written brief on each person you meet, including why the work fits and the questions still worth asking about manual exploitation logic. You decide who to interview. We help with the conversations through the offer.

Questions about this search

When will we see a shortlist?

We agree the search plan after checking your requirements for offensive certification validation and full stack testing, rather than promising a date before the brief is clear. We require evidence of advanced offensive certifications such as OSCP, OSEP, or GPEN.

What if a candidate gets a counteroffer?

We ask what would make someone leave work involving offensive certification validation, and what could make them stay. Before you invest in interviews, we discuss whether your offer changes the problem they want to leave, including the responsibility for manual exploitation logic.

Should this role be remote or on site?

Experience with offensive certification validation and full stack testing does not settle the location question. Tell us what access and supervision the work needs, including who owns decisions about manual exploitation logic, so we approach people who can accept the arrangement.

How does the fee work?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. Agree the fee and the responsibilities covering offensive certification validation and full stack testing in the recruiting agreement before the search proceeds.

What if the hire does not work out?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement. Make sure the agreed scope includes what you expect of manual exploitation logic, rather than leaving that discussion until after the start.
