Every title we cover
- MSP Help Desk Technician (Tier 1)
- MSP Systems Technician (Tier 2)
- MSP Escalation Engineer (Tier 3)
- MSP Project / Onboarding Engineer
- MSP Service Coordinator / Dispatcher
- MSP Service Manager
- vCIO / Technology Alignment Manager
Managed service providers sell reliability to other companies, which means their technicians are measured by many customers at once. The roles in this family include Tier 1 help desk technicians, Tier 2 systems technicians, Tier 3 escalation engineers, project and onboarding engineers, service coordinators and dispatchers, service managers, and vCIO or technology alignment managers who advise client leadership. Buyers fall into two groups. Some are providers building a bench because growth outran their staffing. Others are client companies who want to hire people with MSP backgrounds, either to build an internal team or to take work back from an outside provider.
The MSP environment shapes people in ways worth understanding before hiring. Technicians juggle many tenants, many tools and many passwords, and they tend to be fast context switchers who document well because they have to. They may also lack depth in any one environment and be used to ticket-driven work with limited say over architecture. The tooling is specific: remote monitoring and management platforms, professional services automation systems, documentation tools, backup and security stacks, and Microsoft 365 tenant administration across many customers. We help you match a candidate's tool history to yours, and judge whether a person who thrived in a high volume provider will be happy inside one company, or the reverse.
What we screen for
Platform and tenant experience
We ask which RMM and PSA tools the candidate has used and what they automated in them. For Tier 2 and Tier 3 we look at Microsoft 365 tenant administration, Entra ID conditional access, Intune, Exchange Online, backup restore testing and firewall administration. Certifications such as MS-102, MD-102, Security+ and vendor firewall credentials provide signal. We prefer a candidate who can narrate a tenant migration step by step over one who lists tools.
Documentation and handoff
MSP staff succeed or fail on documentation. We ask for how they record network diagrams, credentials handling and standard procedures, and we look for discipline around password vaults. A candidate who keeps knowledge only in memory leaves the provider exposed whenever they are out. For coordinators and dispatchers we test prioritization with a mock queue containing conflicting customer demands.
Client-facing judgment
Service managers and vCIO candidates are judged on how they talk to customers about money, risk and budgets. We ask for an example of delivering an unwelcome recommendation, such as replacing aging equipment the client did not want to fund. We listen for plain language, a documented standard and a willingness to walk away from a bad fit. Technology alignment work is advisory, so we also check for business curiosity.
Red flags
Concerning signs include reuse of shared admin credentials, unclear thinking about backup verification, and stories where every problem was a customer's fault. A manager who cannot describe how they measure utilization, profitability of a service plan or customer satisfaction may not be ready to lead a service line. Very short tenures across several providers deserve a direct conversation about why.
Where we find them
MSP talent circulates within the services world, and we recruit across it by background type. Internal corporate desks produce solid Tier 1 and Tier 2 technicians who want exposure to variety. Break/fix computer repair shops produce hands-on technicians who need process. Value-added reseller engineers produce project and onboarding engineers with strong vendor knowledge. Telecom and cloud reseller backgrounds produce vCIO candidates who understand contracts. We avoid naming specific firms because the point is the shape of the experience, not the logo.
For client companies who want to take IT in-house, we actively look for MSP veterans who are tired of the volume and want to own one environment, and we are honest that the move requires adjusting to slower, deeper work. For service managers we look for people who have run a queue, a budget and a staffing plan, and we confirm that with reference conversations. Dispatchers often come from field service coordination and logistics.
How a MSP and IT Services Technicians search runs
We start with your service model: tiers, tenants or sites supported, the stack of tools and where the pain currently lives. We ask what you want to change, because hiring a Tier 3 engineer into a poorly documented environment fails without a plan. Candidates go through a phone screen, a technical walk-through of a real tenant or migration and, for managers, a discussion of service reviews and escalations. You receive notes with evidence, not adjectives.
We discuss engagement honestly. Permanent placement suits technicians you want to keep and grow. Contract coverage can fill a backlog or leave coverage, and we quote each case individually. Contract-to-hire works well for Tier 1 and Tier 2, with conversion terms agreed beforehand. If you are moving from an outside provider to an internal team, we can talk through what to hire first, and we link to our guidance on that choice.

Questions about this search
When will we see a shortlist?
We agree the search plan after checking your requirements for platform and tenant experience and documentation and handoff, rather than promising a date before the brief is clear. We ask which RMM and PSA tools the candidate has used and what they automated in them.
What if a candidate gets a counteroffer?
We ask what would make someone leave work involving platform and tenant experience, and what could make them stay. Before you invest in interviews, we discuss whether your offer changes the problem they want to leave, including the responsibility for client-facing judgment.
Should this role be remote or on site?
Experience with platform and tenant experience and documentation and handoff does not settle the location question. Tell us what access and supervision the work needs, including who owns decisions about client-facing judgment, so we approach people who can accept the arrangement.
How will you check fit before we interview?
We ask which RMM and PSA tools the candidate has used and what they automated in them. For Tier 2 and Tier 3 we look at Microsoft 365 tenant administration, Entra ID conditional access, Intune, Exchange Online, backup restore testing and firewall administration. MSP staff succeed or fail on documentation.
How does the fee work?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. Agree the fee and the responsibilities covering platform and tenant experience and documentation and handoff in the recruiting agreement before the search proceeds.
What if the hire does not work out?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement. Make sure the agreed scope includes what you expect of client-facing judgment, rather than leaving that discussion until after the start.
