What this hire really comes down to

A GCP Cloud Engineer manages the core infrastructure where your applications run. You need someone who prioritizes architectural stability over rapid feature delivery. They must understand the nuances of the Google Cloud Resource Hierarchy and how that dictates your security boundaries. The difference between a functional cloud setup and a secure one lies in how they structure folders, projects, and permissions.

Technical judgment in this role centers on cost management and network architecture. Every engineer will propose solutions, but the right one calculates the ongoing operational cost of their design. They evaluate private service connectivity versus public endpoints and defend those choices against your security requirements.

Avoid candidates who view cloud engineering as simple server administration. This role involves managing service accounts, IAM policies, and VPC service controls. A candidate who lacks experience with Google Cloud specific services like Cloud Build or Workload Identity will struggle to integrate your CI/CD pipelines. Focus on their ability to explain the security implications of granting broad permissions at the project level.

What we check before you see anyone

  • Identity and Access Management

Ask them to explain how they structure IAM roles for a multi-project environment. A strong candidate describes using custom roles and organizational policies to enforce the principle of least privilege. They should specifically mention how to prevent privilege escalation by restricting who can create service account keys.

  • Network Architecture

Inquire about their experience with Shared VPCs and VPC Peering. They must explain when to use one over the other based on routing complexity and administrative boundaries. A capable engineer will discuss how to control traffic flow using Firewall Rules and Hierarchical Firewall Policies. Look for answers that account for how they secure egress traffic to the internet while maintaining private connectivity to Google APIs.

  • Landing Zone Configuration

Ask how they design a landing zone for a new business unit. They should touch on folder structures, project isolation, and audit logging configuration. Listen for mention of the resource hierarchy. They must be able to describe how they apply guardrails through Organization Policy Service to ensure compliance with your internal requirements from day one.

  • Deployment Automation

Challenge them to explain their process for managing state in Terraform when multiple team members are working on the same infrastructure. They should discuss backend locking, version control, and how they perform peer reviews on infrastructure code. A reliable candidate treats infrastructure changes with the same rigor as application code deployment, including automated testing of their plans before execution.

Where we find them

Look for professionals currently working in organizations that handle complex multi-account environments. These individuals are often found in companies undergoing migration from legacy data centers to Google Cloud or those managing significant SaaS platforms. Their motivation stems from building scalable, high-availability systems. They value the challenge of automating complex tasks that involve multiple GCP services. These people prioritize platform engineering over maintenance work.

Target candidates who maintain personal projects involving cloud infrastructure, especially those using modular Terraform code. Their interest in the field usually shows in their participation in technical communities or their effort to earn professional-level certifications. While certifications are not direct evidence of production success, they show a baseline knowledge of the platform's constraints.

Mistakes we see

  • Hiring based on general cloud experience without verifying specific Google Cloud expertise. Differences between GCP networking and other clouds are significant and lead to configuration errors.

  • Focusing too heavily on certifications instead of practical problem-solving. A candidate can pass exams but still fail to understand how to manage cost-effective, secure cloud architecture.

  • Underestimating the importance of infrastructure as code skills. If a candidate insists on using the Google Cloud Console for production changes, your environment will lack auditability and consistency.

The search in three steps

  1. Agree the brief

During the intake, identify the specific state of your cloud environment. Are you in a migration phase or managing established infrastructure? This dictates whether you need a builder or an operator.

  2. Find and speak with people

For the headhunt, prioritize those who have worked in companies of a similar scale. A candidate coming from a tiny startup may lack the experience required for enterprise-grade network security and project governance.

  3. Introduce the people who fit

Evaluate their work by giving them a hypothetical scenario involving a cross-project network requirement. Ask them to document the IAM and firewall changes needed to make it secure.

Questions about this search

How should I approach salary for this role?

Pay based on the seniority of the infrastructure problems they solve, not just their years of experience. A senior engineer who can automate your landing zone deployment will demand a premium compared to someone who just manages existing VMs.

Should I require on-site presence?

Most cloud engineers work effectively in remote settings if they have access to the necessary tools and documentation. Prioritize their ability to communicate technical trade-offs in writing over their physical presence in an office.

How do I test their technical fit during the interview?

Present a broken terraform plan or a misconfigured network route. Ask them to explain the steps they take to debug the issue rather than just telling you the answer.

Can I counter a candidate who has other offers?

Only counter if they have proven their technical capability during your assessment process. Avoid bidding wars based on competition, as these candidates often leave quickly if the work does not match their interests.

What is the biggest constraint for a shortlist?

Limit your candidates to those who have demonstrated actual production experience with Google Cloud projects. Experience in other clouds is helpful but not a substitute for knowing the specific GCP service stack.

When is the recruiting fee due?

There is no upfront fee for our contingency search. You pay only if you hire someone we present, under the terms of the signed agreement.

What happens if a candidate receives a counteroffer?

We discuss the reason for considering a move before you invest in interviews. A counteroffer can change the decision, so we revisit that reason rather than assume more pay will settle it.

What are the replacement terms?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

What don't you do in a permanent search?

We do not bill by the hour for permanent search or charge a retainer unless one is agreed. We do not treat reposting your job advertisement as headhunting.
